I find raku so expressive, with its contrasts and distinctive markings, and black and white—simply timeless. Technique and color scheme are an integral part of my work.
Camille Campignion’s works belong to a peaceful yet poetic universe where one is invited to contemplate. She works with clay – she turns it, inscribes and engraves it, playing with the contrasting tones of black and white, the smooth, crackled or rough surfaces. Drawing inspiration from a tree trunk, a leaf, the feather of a bird, or the petal of a flower, she transforms the graphic motifs to make them her own.

Her preferred technique is raku, with its distinctive crackled glaze. Originally created in the 16th century for items used in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, the word “raku” means “enjoyment” or “happiness in the accident.” The technique involves a level of unpredictability in the crackling, making the process technically challenging, but all the more interesting and rewarding.
