Engraving is getting lost to find oneself.
It all starts with fragments, scars, secret folds, invisible and indelible memories. Catherine Gillet’s engravings undertake to transcribe these traces of life. In her works, light and shadow seek each other, talk to each other.
Her preferred technique, hand-engraving with a burin on copper plates, dates back to the Middle Ages. For Catherine, engraving is a process of artistic exploration, seeking to describe the indescribable, writing without words. In the progression from inspiration and creation to the actual printing of the page—ink to copper to paper—a transformation operates. It is a voyage through time and space.
Her works have been exhibited across the globe, in countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, Greece, South Korea and Japan. She has won numerous awards, most recently at BIECTR, the Biennial International Exhibition of Contemporary Engraving in Trois-Rivières, Quebec in September 2017.
