Creating a Moodiie is always a very emotional moment for me.
Clodine Gouriou sculpts stoneware in her atelier in the small village of Chatîllon Coligny in the Loiret countryside, almost 100 miles south of Paris. She calls her creations her “Moodiies,” little totems pared down to the bare essence of a person: two eyes and a mouth on a rounded post with stubs suggesting arms. These stocky little pylons in white or black chamotte (grog) clay are pleasing and calming in their simplicity. The beauty of these minimalist sculptures is that everyone can relate to them. They have been compared to African masks, Easter Island statues, Asian or even Aztec art. Clodine likes the idea they cross cultures and unite people in the universal language of art.
