La Surprise de Vivre I

Catherine Gillet

“The Surprise of Living I” is the first in a series of two original signed engravings by Catherine Gillet. Product details

The two engravings that make up the series complete each other: the first one belonging to realm of the mineral, the second one vegetable, symbolizing a living being, plant or animal, that delicately rises in flight. Catherine transcribes onto copper the extreme fragility of life.

Catherine begins her artistic creation by painting the plates with gouache and pastels, using her hands and arms to form the shape of her thoughts. Then the engraving work begins, a slow precise effort, an enigma she must solve, digging line after line onto the copper plates, transposing her sensations and emotions without betraying them.
